Itinerary Safari Route 40
Argentina’s grandiose Route 40 has long delighted passersby with its wonderfully varied landscapes that, together, perfectly express the multifaceted nature of Argentina. On this Safari Route 40 adventure, you can revel in the culture of northern Argentina and enjoy two days of sightseeing and wine-tasting.
The tour departs from Salta city centre at 6.30am, and begins with a pleasant drive through the outlying towns of Cerrillos, La Merced, El Carril and Chicoana. After climbing 20km from Cuesta del Obispo, you will come to Los Cardones National Park, a scenic stretch of land covering over 64,000 hectares and home to the widest variety of cacti in the world.
Your journey then continues to the ancient pueblo of Cachi, where you can explore the Archaeological Museum and visit the centuries-old colonial church, before moving on to Quebrada de las Fechas and the villages of Molinos, Angastaco, and San Carlos. The simply stunning city of Cafayate will be reached in the late afternoon hours and it is here that you will spend the night.
The second day is all about wine: traverse Calchaqui Valley to learn about the region’s world-renowned viniculture and then stop off at one of the bodegas to sample an exquisite Malbec or two and gaze at the intoxicating vistas. The tour is rounded off with a return trip to Salta via Route 68, along which you can admire the beauty of Los Conchas River and Quebrada de Cafayate.
