Itinerary Discover Isla Martillo and walk among the penguins of Ushuaia

Located about 90 km from downtown Ushuaia, Isla Martillo is one of the most captivating natural sites in the Beagle Channel. Every summer, hundreds of Magellanic and Gentoo penguins return to the island to nest and raise their chicks. This tour combines scenic driving, a short boat ride, and a guided walk that allows you to observe these incredible birds in their natural environment — responsibly and up close.

Tour itinerary

1. Check-in and departure from Ushuaia
Your adventure begins with check-in at the Tourist Pier (Av. Prefectura Naval 410). From there, we’ll set off along National Route 3, crossing the pristine forests, peat bogs, and mountain landscapes that characterize Tierra del Fuego.

2. Scenic route to Estancia Harberton
We’ll continue along Route J until reaching the historic Estancia Harberton — the region’s oldest ranch, founded in 1886. When open, an entrance fee is required and paid on-site (the estancia is closed on Tuesdays).

3. Beagle Channel navigation
At Harberton, you’ll board a semi-rigid zodiac boat for a 15-minute navigation across the Beagle Channel. Enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, seabirds, and the rugged beauty of Patagonia’s southern tip.

4. Guided walk among penguins on Isla Martillo
Upon arrival at the island, a specialized nature guide will lead you on a one-hour interpretative walk through the penguin colony. You’ll learn about their habits, breeding behavior, and the conservation measures that protect them — all while keeping a respectful distance from the animals.

5. Return to Ushuaia
After the visit, we’ll sail back to Harberton and return to Ushuaia by land, enjoying the scenic route and, with a bit of luck, a beautiful sunset over the Beagle Channel.

The crossing to Isla Martillo is done aboard a semi-rigid zodiac boat, safe and stable, designed for small groups navigating the Beagle Channel.

  • Do I need to be in good shape for the walk?

Not at all. The trail is short and easy, but you should be able to walk on uneven terrain. Waterproof and comfortable shoes are recommended.
